This has been a good trip, financially useless, but never the less a good trip. I wandered here after being in Belize my normal three months with Eunes. I fully expected to be on the beach camping and hanging out in Sian Ka'an. It would bother most people but I actually like it. I have a routine down pat you know. I have a little place carved out near a military installation. It's pretty safe since the drug runners and thieves avoid the area. It's really one of two places that are my favorites. Here the beach and water are clean. I have the place to myself since you need a good 4x4 truck to get here.
This time was different. I met up with one of my friends RJ and was kindly offered a place to stay. Nice. So I've been hanging out working at the REMAX office here in Tulum. RJ just broke up with his girlfriend so the girlfriends mother is also gone from the guest house. Sweet! So instead of laying on the beach or wandering the shores I've been working at a desk with an internet connection the entire time. I took this opportunity to really sharpen my skills on Joomla and managed to learn a whole new set of skills!
I probably should have worked and gotten some money but this was too good of an opportunity. I did meet dozens and dozens of people that RJ and Robert both know as well. I think between the two of them they know half the town. Roberto's wife, Violeta, cooked pozole for us one day and Jaime's wife cooked for us a couple of times. This has been a bit of a culinary adventure for me. I also loaded up on tons of red meat since it's very difficult to get good quality beef in Belize. I'll probably get a case of gout.
People here also seem to have a strong interest in my skills as a web designer. I can't use Belize as a true testing ground the country is too small and the competition to
o restricted. There are precious few talented web designers in Belize. I don't feel it's a good test of the open market. Here in Quintana Roo, Mexico it's a different story. I have plenty of competition and they are really good. I think I landed a new account and have a couple of prospects for partnering for some online projects. It feels good.
This trip by far has been the most productive here in Mexico. I'll start working this area now. I plan on being up here every couple of months for at least a couple of weeks each time. Eventually I'll end up heading to Cancun. It's a bit ironic though. I came to this region for the sheer hell of it. I came here to wander around aimlessly with reckless abandon and take pictures. I came here to get rid of the crowds and urban civilization.
New a couple of years later, I'm living in a small apartment. I have a wonderful girlfriend and I'm getting more settled by the minute. I rarely camp and wander aimlessly now. My life is pretty focused. I shoot butt loads of hotels and resorts and rarely shoot nature, wildlife, and landscape. Avoiding Cancun as much as I have, I will now be going there and probably regularly. I'm happy though so what the hell. So in summary, I'm a little heavier in weight, have more friends, and have more prospects and ideas. Life is good.
Regards,
Ben
